Resolved Question:

I have a 1996 Ford Tarus with starting difficultes. I found the fuel pressure to be very low at 26 PSI. Is the problem the fuel pump or the fuel pressure regulator.

Hello and welcome to Just Answer.

My name is XXXXX XXXXX I will try to assist you with the fuel pressure problem.

While both could be at fault, the fuel pump is the more common problem.

Remove the vaccum hose from the regulator. If there is fuel present in the vacuum line the regulator is bad and will need to be replaced.

If the fuel pressure gauge rises slowly when fuel pump is activated the pump is at fault. It should snap up to pressure.
