how can you tell if your ball joints are going bad

snapontech :

Welcome to Justanswer

snapontech :

To check the ball joints you have to jack up the front of the vehicle then move the wheel up and down

snapontech :

Ther should not be play if so the ball joint is bad then check side to side this should not have play or the tie rods are bad

Customer:

did that no movement but still have a hard clunk in right front

snapontech :

This can be a issue with the suspension

snapontech :

Do you notice any cupping on the tire

Customer:

no tires are wearing even

snapontech :

Have you suspected the front suspension on that wheel

Customer:

yes took it to ford house they said all was good? still have hard clunk when going over rough roads

snapontech :

Is it rapid clunks when going down rough roads

Customer:

sometimes but not all the time

snapontech :

Its very hard to see a bad ball joint but thats the problem

snapontech :

This is known on these I have had to diagnose this exact problem on alot of these and the ball joint is always the issue

snapontech :

I would replace the upper and lower ball joint the noise will stop for sure

Customer:

they were suppost to have been changed out about 30,000 miles back at a ford shop, got 135,000 on the last ones.

snapontech :

Really replaced 30k ago that sucks there is nothing else that will cause that exact clunk

snapontech :

Sounds like a quality control problem on the replacement part

Customer:

thanks
