Ford F150 XLT How hard is it to change the tensioner pulley

Resolved Question:

How hard is it to change the tensioner pulley on a 1993 F150 with a 5.8L V8? Also, what tools are suggested? Just bought a used F150, and when I turn on an accessory I hear a whining sound. I've been told that the serpentine belt looks very good and that this may be an answer.

Welcome to Justanswer

Customer:

Hello

snapontech :

So are you removing the tensioner

Customer:

Not yet. Thinking this may save my serpentine belt in the future. The one on there looks like original equipment from 1993 (178k miles ago).

Customer:

Had one go out on a Taurus a few years back and caused a lot of problems.

snapontech :

Yes I would replace the tensioner belt and idler pulley to be sure its good.

snapontech :

  1. Remove belt as outlined under BELT.

  2. Using suitable 5/16 inch closed end wrench, loosen idle pulley retention bolt or nut. On 5.0L, 5.8L and 7.5L except F-Super Duty Motorhome chassis models, bolts have a lefthand thread, loosen in clockwise direction. On 4.9L and F-Super Duty Motorhome chassis models, bolts have righthand thread, loosen in counterclockwise direction.

  3. Remove dust shield attaching nut or bolt, remove pulley from tensioner arm locating boss.

  4. Reverse procedure to install.

snapontech :

There are the steps pretty simple process on the matter

Customer:

When I go to parts store, do I tell them I need one for a '93 F150 V8?

snapontech :

Here is the pic for routing the belt

snapontech :

Yes tell them 93 f150 5.8 liter engine

Customer:

I've heard there were several versions on this year model. They use the same pulley?

snapontech :

They should give you the proper one the 5.8 only uses the 90MM pulley

snapontech :

The 4.9 has a different option not the 5.8

snapontech :

They will get the right one for you dont worry

Customer:

Thanks! The old girl has a lot of miles on her, but I think she'll give me a few more.

Customer:

Parts store suggestion?

snapontech :

Definately! I use napa

snapontech :

They seem to have the right stuff

Customer:

I used to work at Federal Mogul (mostly dealing with brakes and chassis), but I know NAPA are good folks.

snapontech :

Exactly!! Happy 4th of July Thanks in advance for the accept its greatly appreciated and any tips. Have a great day! Danny
