Hello there!

When was the last time the engine was tuned up? No, not just plugs, but a full tune up! The whole nine yards! Any part of the secondary ignition will do this including the ignition coil or coils! This sounds like a classic ignition misfire! They usually go bad under a load like under acceleration, but can be noticeable at any time. It is very important to have your engine equipped with good tune up parts or you may be causing damage to other components of you car like the catalytic converter which can be expensive!

Possible causes:

Ignition misfire causes by any bad tune up part and or ignition coil or coils.
Bad spark plugs, spark plug wires and cap and rotor (if equipped)
Wrong tune up parts spark plug, wires etc...

Insulator cracks.
Wear.
Improper gap.
Burned electrodes.
Heavy deposits.

The quickest way to check the ignition components, is by looking closely for leaking secondary voltage. Visual look at all the tune up parts to see if you can see any sparks coming from any of the wires or coil (or coils) when the vehicle is running. If not, you can put your hand on the coil/coils and wires when the engine is running and see if you feel any small voltage leaking form the tune up parts. Check spark plug wires by connecting ohmmeter to ends of each wire in question. If meter reads over 30,000 ohms, replace wire(s).
ALso, with engine running, spray coils and plug wires with fine water mist to check for shorts.

It will leak secondary ignition voltage from the tune up parts caused by high resistance from carbon tracking if they are bad. This is very common if the tune up parts are not changed regularly!

If any is found, the tune up parts are simple bad an will need to be replaced! If none is found than you can spray a mist of water on the tune up parts when the engine is running and see if that causes the engine to stumble or run rough at all. Again, if it does, the tune up parts are bad and will need to be replaced!

the 1989 ford f 150 has new plugs, wires, dist. cap, rotor, fuel filter, all set to proper settings. it only does it when you start with a cold engine. when engine heats up, it runs great.

I would recommend to check the coolant temp sensor. This is very common!

Here is some info from alldata.

description and Operation

Fig. 7 Engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor

The ECT, Fig. 7, sensor detects the temperature of engine coolant and supplies information to the ECA assembly. The ECT sensor is threaded into the heater outlet fitting on the engine. For engine control applications, the ECT signal is used to modify ignition timing, EGR flow and air/fuel mixture. On models with an electronic instrument cluster, the ECT output is used to control the coolant temperature indicator.

Here are the specs.

177 ohms at 212 deg F
241 ohms at 194 deg F
332 ohms at 176 deg F
467 ohms at 158 deg F
667 ohms at 140 deg F
973 ohms at 122 deg F
1459 ohms at 104 deg F
2238 ohms at 86 deg F
3520 ohms at 68 deg F
5670 ohms at 50 deg F
9420 ohms at 32 deg F
16180 ohms at -14 deg F
28680 ohms at -4 deg F
52700 ohms at -22 deg F
100700 ohms at -40 deg F

ISSUE: Hard cold starts, hesitation and stalls on initial start-up or during idle or decel may be caused by sludge in the throttle body and/or idle by-pass valve. Sludge deposits or oil film on the throttle body bore and plate or the idle air by-pass valve may cause one or more of the following conditions.
^ Hard Cold Start
^ Stall On Initial Start-Up
^ Stall During Idle
^ Stall During Decel
^ Rough Idle
^ Rolling Idle
^ Hesitation During Acceleration
ACTION: A new idle air by-pass service kit (F2PZ-9F939-A) is now available for service use to correct sludge contamination concerns of the throttle bore and plate only. It eliminates the need to clean the majority of past model throttle body applications. Cleaning is not required on sludge tolerant throttle body designs released for 1991 and newer model years.

Figure 1

Install an idle air by-pass service kit (F2PZ-9F939-A) as applicable to provide a permanent correction for symptoms caused by throttle body sludge deposits. Refer to the instruction sheet included in the kit for installation details. Refer to Figure 1 for a specific application list of EFI (port fuel Injection) engines involved in this TSB article.

The idle air by-pass service kit (F2PZ-9F939-A) includes the following items.

^ One (1) Idle Adjust Spacer
^ Two (2) Gaskets
^ Two (2) Attaching Bolts
^ One (1) "Attention" Sticker
^ One (1) Instruction Sheet

Figure 2

Refer to Figure 2 for a pictorial of the kits components.

NOTE: EFFECTIVE WITH THIS TSB, THROTTLE BODY CLEANING IS NO LONGER COVERED UNDER 5/50 EMISSIONS WARRANTY, UNLESS AS SPECIFIED IN THE FOLLOWING APPLICATION CHARTS. FAILURE TO FOLLOW THE CORRECT PROCEDURE MAY RESULT IN THE CLAIM BEING DISALLOWED.

The idle air adjust spacer incorporates sludge tolerant design features that eliminate throttle body sludge related conditions. Once installed, throttle body cleaning is not allowed and periodic adjustment of the throttle body is not required.

A rough idle, hesitation on acceleration, and/or a stall after start-up with no DTCs present may occur on some vehicles. This concern is noted at odometer reading greater than 48,280 km (30,000 miles). This may be caused by the throttle body gasket leaking, resulting in internal throttle body air passage due to vacuum. ACTION:
Replace the throttle body gasket with a revised Throttle Body Gasket (F5TZ-9E936-BA). Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Perform normal diagnostics as directed by the appropriate year Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) or Engine/Emissions Diagnosis (H) Service Manual.
2. If no fault is indicated, replace the throttle body gasket with the revised Throttle Body Gasket (F5TZ-9E936-BA). Refer to the appropriate model/year Powertrain/Drivetrain Service Manual, Section 03-04B.
3. Test drive the vehicle to verify the fix results. If a concern is present, return to the symptom index of the appropriate year PC/ED or H Service Manual to service any additional symptoms.

ISSUE: Rough idle, hesitation, poor throttle response, induction backfire and stalls during cold start/warm up may be caused by the poor volatility of some high octane premium grade unleaded fuels (91 octane or higher (R+M)/2). When compared to regular grade unleaded fuel (87 octane (R+M)/2), high octane premium grade unleaded fuel may cause long crank time.
ACTION: Use a regular grade unleaded fuel in all vehicles, except where a premium unleaded fuel is recommended in the Owner Guide. If lean air-fuel type symptoms are experienced, determine the grade and brand of fuel used and offer the following service tips.
^ Advise those using a higher octane grade fuel to switch to a regular grade unleaded fuel. For those using a regular grade fuel, advise them to try another brand.
^ Do not advise using a higher octane unleaded fuel than is recommended for that specific engine. Ford engines are designed to perform best using a high quality regular grade unleaded fuel.
^ Only advise using a higher octane unleaded fuel to avoid potentially damaging spark knock or ping, but do so only after mechanical fixes are ineffective.
NOTE: ALL UNLEADED GASOLINES USED SHOULD CONTAIN DETERGENT ADDITIVES THAT ARE ADVERTISED AS HAVING "KEEP CLEAN" OR "CLEAN UP" PERFORMANCE FOR BOTH INTAKE VALVES AND FUEL INJECTORS.
