what makes '97 Crown Vic steering wheel has so much play in it at 60 miles an hour?
Optional Information: Year : 1997 Make : Ford Model: crown vic Already Tried: 2 alignments, replace idler arm and pitman arm adjust steering gear
Hello and welcome to justanswer.com
Does the steering wheel shake at that speed? Or do you feel excessive movement?
no wheel does not shake - just has a lot of "play" in it. It seems to wander until you turn wheel to keep it in line...
This may be a loose idler or pitman arm on the steering linkage.
ou will need o have the fornt suspension checked for excessive play. I see the tie rods, idler and pitman arms all cause this.
they were both replaced and the steering gear was tightened.
OK also look at the steering shaft that attches to the steering gear as this may be loose.
Lastly your vehicle has a EVO system that will stiffen when at higher speeds. If there is a problem with the system it will default to full assist so this may also be your problem.
you can observe a 1/4" play in drag link - could this also contribute to problem?
Yes it may. That play is either from a tire rod, idler, pitman or the steering box itself.
is it possible to replace steering box in a vehicle this old?
Yes it is. They are not that expensive on the aftermarket as there are remans available.
okay - thank you for your help.
