1996 ford ranger auto trans suddenly wont shift. Shift lever

This answer was rated:

1996 ford ranger auto trans suddenly won't shift. Shift lever suddenly felt loose when going from park to reverse, was able to get it into drive but then was stuck in drive. Got it home but now it won't start. Shift lever will move but is not engaging. According to owners manual, it has electronic shift either 4r44e or the 55. Ideas?
Hi my name is XXXXX XXXXX shift cable on you truck has broken and the truck is stuck in drive. with the lever on the trans in drive the truck will not start. you are going to have to replace the shift cable and have it adjusted. this is a common problem

thanks don. please follow up: is this a fix that any transmission shop would be capable of, or would a ford dealer be better? How much should i expect to pay? Will any special precautions be needed to tow it? thanks, bob
any shop can do this repair does not need to be trans shop, just needs a lift to repair. does not need to open trans at all cable on outside of trans. about $150
