2002 ford explorer: this sputtering sound and the check engine light

hello i have a 2002 ford explorer it has been running fine until today all of a sudden its making this sputtering sound and the check engine light is on not sure what it can be please help

Sounds like you developed a vacuum leak.Listen for the leak to determine the cause. The check engine light is probably lean codes. P0171 - P0174. You can go to Auto Zone and they will pull the codes for you for free to tell you what codes the computer saw to turn on the light. Look for vacuum lines deterioated or loose on the engine.You can spray carb cleaner to try and locate by when you spray over a vac leak the engine will rev up a little.
