1997 f-150: automatic..4x4 light comes..noise under..front drive shaft

Resolved Question:

I have a 1997 f-150 automatic 4x4 with electonic shift and it will not lock into 4x4, When I turn the switch to 4x4, the 4x4 light comes on and I can here a noise under the truck. I have also crawled under the truck when it says it is in 4x4 and grabbed the front drive shaft and I can move it about 1/16th of a turn, when it is not in 4x4 it turns freely. There has also been a few times I have wiggled the drive shaft and it will lock in. I have tried shifting into 4x4 going slow, fast (50kmph), in newtral stopped, in newtral rolling, forward and reverse. Do you have any suggestions?

ISSUE:
Non-engagement of the front axle (4X4), "clicking" and "grinding" heard during 4X4 engagement, and/or "clicking" heard while driving straight or in a LH turn in 4X2 engagement may occur on some vehicles. This may be caused by axial thrust loads on the shift fork assembly.

ACTION:
Confirm customer concern and install Front Drive Axle Repair Kit (F75Z-3N139-KT). The kit contains a gear tooth configuration that reduces axial thrust loads on the shift fork. Refer to Instruction Sheet I.S. 7163 included with the repair kit for service procedure details.

The Front Drive Axle Repair Kit (F75Z-3N139-KT) contains the following items:

^ One (1) O-Ring Seal - Shift Lever Shaft
