my car runs rough and will show a engine light that it is overheating but it beeps and then resolves itself without actually ever overheating is this a thermostat issue or something bigger

The problem is caused by a malfunctioning cooling fan motor assembly as referenced in this ford service bulletin.


LINCOLN:2001-2002 LS


Some vehicles may exhibit an engine overheating condition and/or the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) may also be illuminated with codes P1285 and P1299 stored in memory. This may be caused by an inoperative Hydraulic Cooling Fan (HCF). This inoperative condition may be intermittent.


Replace the HCF motor with revised part XW4Z-8K621-AA to correct the condition
