HiCustomer

Thank you for asking your question on JustAnswer.

The shifter on you 2001 Ranger is release by the signel from your brake light to the shift lock acuator. Start with checking the 2 fuses to the brakes. F2-9 and F2-10 in the interior fuse panel. ALso see if the brake light are working.

Thanks Ronnie - We didn't get a chance to try it - it worked as soon as we started the truck. So, should we check the fuse anyway, cause chances are it will happen again?

HiCustomer

Thank you for asking your question on JustAnswer.

Yes you should but its likely ok if it started. I would also make sure the connection at the brake switch is tight.
