96 Ford F150: automatic..V8..truck shifts..overdrive

Resolved Question:

I have a 96 Ford F150 automatic 4.6 V8. When the truck shifts into overdrive the transmission shutters or does not want to go into gear. Feels like it may be trying to do this at the next lower gear also. The truck has 126,000 miles. Don't know if or when transmission last serviced if ever. The truck was recently purchased.

Hello and welcome to

96 F150 with a 4.6? Does it feel like you are drving over rumble strips? Is your truck 2 orXXXXX Has the check engine light come on? Other the over drive problem how does the trans shift?

Customer: replied 7 years ago.
The truck isXXXXX No the truck runs smoothly when driving. The engine light has not come on. The transmission seems to shift good through the other gears other than the next lower gear. My son says it feels like it may be slipping in those two gears.

The trans in the 1997 F150 4.6 has an issue with torque converter chatter. What we do is either flush the transmission and install the Mercon V fluid and a shudder additive. Instead of flushing you can drop the pan and drain the converter to get all the fluid out. Replace with the Mercon V and install a shudder additive. This may have to be done twice in order to totally eliminate the problem.
