I have a 2008 Lincoln Navigator 4x4. The 4x4 system has buttons to shift into 4x2, 4x4 auto, or 4x4. When I purchased the vehicle I was told it had 4x4 low range that would be selected by the computer as needed in the 4x4 range. I have just tried pulling my boat up a steep ramp at low speed in 4x4 range and did not get low. I called Ford and they asked for my vin number and I was told that this vehicle does have low range gears. I have checked with dealers and they say everything is working properly. Do they understand what low range is? I only have 6k miles on this and am ready to dump it and get an Expedition with a rotary dial that says 4x4 Loww. Any help on this?
The dealer is giving you incorrect information, the Navigator is equipped with a 1 speed torque on demand system, only the Expedition comes with the 2 speed system. Here is the shop manual description.
The 1-speed torque-on-demand (Navigator) and 2-speed torque-on-demand (Expedition) Four-Wheel Drive (4WD) systems.
Principles of Operation
The Navigator is equipped with an automatic, electronic-shift system that allows the operator to choose (by pressing the mode select buttons) between 3 different modes: 4X2, 4X4 AUTO and 4X4. The operator can switch between 4X2 and 4X4 AUTO mode or 4X4 mode at any speed below 88 km/h (55 mph). The operator can switch between 4X4 AUTO mode and 4X4 mode at any speed.
On different sites on line they say that this vehicle does come with 4x4 low range gears. When I say I called Ford, I called Detroit. They asked for my vin number and told me that this vehiclle does have low range gears. Why would it have low range if not usable and why would I be told that the vehicle does have low range gears after checking the vin number?
The single speed transfer case use din the Navigator does not come with the planetary gear set installed that is neccesary for low range.I ahev enclosed a break down of the Navigator trasfercase.
One-Speed Torque-On-Demand
The 1-speed torque-on-demand transfer case consists of the following components:
The Borg-Warner 1-speed torque-on-demand transfer case is a 2-piece magnesium design. The transfer case transfers engine power from the transmission to the front and rear axles. Under normal driving conditions, the unit is in All-Wheel Drive (AWD), but when desired, the operator may shift intoXXXXXhigh (4H). The operator can switch between 2-Wheel Drive (2WD), AWD and Four-Wheel Drive (4WD) HIGH mode at any speed. The transfer case is equipped with an internal electromagnetic clutch and is shifted electronically. In AWD, the 4X4 control module varies the torque split between front and rear drivelines by controlling the transfer case clutch. Under most conditions, the 4X4 control module activates the transfer case clutch at a minimum duty cycle (percentage of time the clutch is turned on) which allows for a slight speed difference between the front and rear drivelines which normally occurs when negotiating a corner on dry pavement. When the rear wheels are overpowered, the 4X4 control module detects this slip condition and the duty cycle to the transfer case clutch is increased until the speed difference between front and rear drivelines is reduced. In this manner, the 4X4 control module can redirect engine torque to the front wheels when the rear wheels lose traction, yet still allow operation in the AWD mode on dry pavement. The unit is lubricated by a positive displacement fluid pump that channels fluid flow through holes in the rear output shaft.
