oops sorry: 1997 F250 XLT 4x4 has 239671 miles, automatic transmission 7.5 liter or 460 gasoline fuel injected. Fuel lines, filters and fuel pump has been tested. Ignition module has been replaced in the past per previous owner and mechanic.

The code is for an ignition system problem in the IDM (ignition diagnostic monitor) signal. Here is the pinpoint test from the ford service manual.Unfortunately it requires a ford diagnostic tool. But if you look through the tests you can see the end results of each test to give you an idea where the problem may be.

JG50 CHECK IDM SIGNAL AT PCM CONNECTOR

  • Key off.
  • Connect Rotunda DI diagnostic harness 007-00097 or equivalent to 60-pin breakout box, connect B- lead to negative post of battery, and connect ICM tee to ICM and vehicle harness.
  • Make sure PIP OPEN/NORMAL/SPOUT OPEN switch on DI diagnostic harness is in NORMAL position.
  • Use DI diagnostic overlay on breakout box.
  • Disconnect PCM.
  • Crank engine and measure voltage between Pin 48 (IDM) of the PCM connector and J7 (B-).

Note: If voltage intermittently drops below 1.0 volt ac, GO to Z50 for intermittent diagnostics.

Is voltage greater than 1.0 volt ac?

Yes No
REPLACE PCM. REMOVE all test equipment. RECONNECT all components. RERUN Quick Test. GO to JG51 .

JG51 CHECK FOR IDM SHORT HIGH IN HARNESS

  • Key off.
  • Disconnect diagnostic harness ICM tee from ICM only; leave ICM tee connected to vehicle harness.
  • Key on.
  • Measure voltage between J23 (IDM) and J7 (B-).

Is voltage less than 0.5 volt dc?

Yes No
GO to JG52 . SERVICE IDM short high in harness between PCM connector and ICM connector. REMOVE all test equipment. RECONNECT all components. COMPLETE PCM Reset to clear DTCs. RERUN Quick Test.

JG52 CHECK FOR IDM SHORT LOW IN HARNESS

  • Key off.
  • Measure resistance between J23 (IDM) and J7 (B-).

Is resistance greater than 10K ohms?

Yes No
GO to JG53 . SERVICE IDM short low in harness between PCM connector and ICM connector. REMOVE all test equipment. RECONNECT all components. COMPLETE PCM Reset to clear DTCs. RERUN Quick Test.

JG53 CHECK FOR IDM OPEN IN HARNESS

  • Measure resistance between J23 (IDM) and Pin 48 of the PCM connector.

Is resistance less than 5.0 ohms?

Yes No
REPLACE ICM. REMOVE all test equipment. RECONNECT all components. COMPLETE PCM Reset to clear DTCs. RERUN Quick Test. SERVICE IDM open in harness between ICM and PCM connector. REMOVE all test equipment. RECONNECT all components. COMPLETE PCM Reset to clear DTCs. RERUN Quick Test.

would this problem cause the engine to shut down for no reason and act as if it ran out of gas. you can spray starting fluid into the intake and it starts back up. the shops were never able to recreate the problem and there were never any error codes to go by. Ford dealer said they couldn't do anything unless the truck actually died and we had it towed in immediately after the shutdown without trying to start it again. The truck runs beautifully but the check engine light came on and the obd2 runs the error immediately.
