What is fault code B1600 for 2002 Ford Explorer Sport

This answer was rated:

My check engine light went on last week. I was given the fault codes P0171 & P0174 and B1600. I found in the book the value for the P codes but not the B1600.

DTC B1600: PATS IGNITION KEY TRANSPONDER SIGNAL NOT RECEIVED

NOTE: Large metallic objects, a second PATS ignition key, or devices such as electronic credit cards on the same key ring may cause vehicle starting problem and possibly set this code. Ensure customers encoded ignition key is an approved Ford encoded ignition key. Encoded keys from Rotunda, Ilco, and Strattec are also approved keys.

1. Turn ignition off. Using NGS tester, retrieve and record continuous DTCs. Clear DTCs and perform PATS module self-test. If DTC B 1600 is present, go to next step. If other DTCs are present, go to appropriate DTC test and repair as necessary. If no DTCs are present, system is operating properly.
2. Obtain NEW encoded ignition key and insert into ignition lock cylinder. Turn ignition on. Program NEW encoded ignition key. Using NGS tester, clear DTCs and repeat PATS module self-test. If DTC B 1600 is still present, go to next step. If any other DTCs are present, perform appropriate DTC test and repair as necessary. If no DTCs are present, system is operating properly.
3. Turn ignition off. Replace PATS transceiver module. Using customers original encoded ignition key, repeat PATS module self-test. If DTC B 1600 is not present, system is operating properly. If DTC B 1600 is present, replace PATS module. See Cycle ignition switch using newly encoded ignition keys. Using NGS tester, repeat PATS module self-test. If no DTCs are present, testing is complete.

Reply to zzdaryl's Post: I have no problem opening or starting my engine. Does this mean that B1600 fault code has nothing to do with the engine performance? Or will soon affect my engine?

It could eventually cause a no start because the PATS system is not getting the information it needs from the key. Or it is getting incorrect info because of outside interference explained above.
