Did both of these concerns happen at the same time?

Reply to Chris (aka- Moose)'s Post: yes it happened when my daughter put the suv in 4wd low and turned the overdrive off

Was she moving when she engaged the transfer case into 4 low?

Was she towing 4wd thus the need for low range.

Customer: replied 9 years ago.
I was told no but I was not with her

Was she towing in 4 low thus needing to use low instead of high
Customer: replied 9 years ago.
she was not towing. There was really no need for 4wd low

Hello I'm Chris a Ford Certified Transmission/4wd Specialist.

Thanks for asking your question. I am eager to get your vehicle back up and running correct, I am here to help you out for a small fee far less than a dealership, so if this information is of aid PLEASE PRESS ACCEPT and help me out financially. Please reply if further discussion is needed.

Ok lets get it out of low first. Drive the vehicle in a straight line for ten feet with the selector in low. Now stop and place the trans in neutral and hold the brakes. Now shift to 4 high. It should clunk in. If not then repeat and have someone tap on the shift motor with a hammer while you shift it again. If it still does not come out then suspect the shift motor.

To diagnose the OD flashing concern you need a scan tool. Auto Zone does this for free.

Here are possible problems.

  1. Transmission TR sensor is damaged and does not know if your in neutral
  2. Vehicle was driven normal in 4 low which can tear up a transmission since it shifts to fast and goes into high gear at about 30mph.
  3. Vehicle was some how shifted to low while moveing when can tear up the T case ans the transmission
  4. Transmission could have damage not associated with the transfer case.
  5. Truck was used for 4 wheelin which can tear up the transfer case and casue the transmission to fault from excessive heat.
