How to remove the cooling fan from the water pump on a 2002 Ford Explorer with a 4.0L V-6 engine

To Remove:

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist




  • Remove Upper air deflector (if equiped) (A)
  • On 4.6L engines, detach the A/C tube from the retainers

  • Remove the 2 Radiator Fan Shroud Screws (L) The upper radiator fan shroud (N)
  • Remove the 2 Radiator Fan Shroud Screws (L)
  • Remove Cooling Fan (O)

    Cardboard must be placed against the radiator when removing the cooling fan. Failure to follow these procedures can result in damage to the vehicle. Place a piece of cardboard against the radiator to prevent damage while removing the cooling fan.

  • Using the special tools, remove the fan blade and the clutch assembly
  • Turn the nut to the rear of the blade counterclock wise then unscrew fan blade from water pump one the blade is loose
