1999 Ford Windstar 3.8 Recently replaced steering pump.

Resolved Question:

1999 Ford Windstar 3.8 Recently replaced steering pump. it's losing fluid but the pump and the lines to the box and rack are dry. I believe it's coming from the steering box but doesn't seem like as much as is missing from the reservoir. Is the steering box separate from the steering rack and if so should I replace the box and not the rack?

Hi, the rack seals leak into the boots and then start leaking out of the boots. there is no box in this system . You can visually look at the boots of the rack and they usually swell up. Here are the steps to replace it is a pretty big job .

Reply to Cheeko's Post: Should I pull the rack and have the seals replace or replace the whole rack with a remanufactured one?
Expert:  Randall (Cheeko) replied 10 years ago.

Hi, I would have the boots checked on the rack to verify the leak first. If it leads to the rack inner seals I would replace the whole rack. Thanks If you need more help please let me know
