Service engine soon light came on. Had OBDII checked and this is the code that was read. Is this something I can repair myself?
P1744 means "Excessive torque converter slippage"
When your truck goes into OD it will lock up the clutch in the torque converter to eliminate the fluid slippage in there.
This can be caused by a bad control solenoid, a bad converter or a fluid problem. I would suggest first having the trans fluid flushed and use BG Trans Flush system when you do it. I also suggest using synthetic fluid when you refill the system.
This may not cure your problem, but it does in a lot of cases. to find a shop near you that uses the BG Products go to http://www.bgfindashop.com/
Good luck

I have a Ford Taurus SE. Does the same thing apply?
Yes. All late model cars use the same kind of torque converter lock up system. Ford has actually issued several service bulletins on this and they too recommend trying a flush first.
good luck
Thank you for your help. I'll try the flush.
Let me know how it comes out
