Hi, I’m Chris. Welcome and thanks for asking your question!
I assume the shifter is stuck in park and will not come out? If so when this occurs have you verified the brake lamps illuminate when the brakes are pressed?
After replacing ball joints, and front end alignment . Anti lock light stays on all the time. This may have nothing to do with that . Started gradually would be out & just shift lever would not shift. could wait try obvious things like moving steering ,up & down, turning steering wheel. & then would shift into gear. I think maybe even could have something to do with maybe electronics. Because sometimes gas monitor milage will be going crazy, siting still changing from 200 t0 400 for example . This has been on & off from time to time. Car anteana up and down getting stuck like. I removed fuse to anteana but did not make a difference. Air bag light comes on sometimes, then goes off. Air suspension light stays on, don't know how to reset it either. Rear air suspension replaced with manual, even though I turn off switch in trunck, the light still stays on. And for a long time engine will surge like giving gas , jumping around. I think thats all I can think of right now. Thank You Cathy Skill 58 female, try to do what I can , basic mechanic skills with tools. This one I can't figure out . I stay up late, have Verizon phone, You may call if you like , sometimes my writing don't make sence. lol
We are only allowed to address one concern per post. You have mentioned 6 issues!
If the shifter issues in the one you want to address in this post, then I need to know if the brake lights are illuminating when you press the brake pedal and the shifter is stuck in park?
Oh yeah I did ask at auto zone if they could check anti lock light. was told that had nothing to do with check engine light. that maybe could have dust or dirt on sensor from changing the ball joint. But I don;t know where the sensor is, or even what anti lock is.
Cathy, you do understand I can only help with one issue?
Which issue do you want me to help you with?
I sent reply about 20 min ago, But status says" waiting on you"If you did not get my reply Answer is No, Brake lights do not illuminate when pressed when stuck in park. When it does go in gear then brake light will come on. When stuck in park, I can turn car off, the turn key put in nuetral, the brake light do not illuminate when pressed then either.
Thanks for the reply Cathy.
Your concern is the brake lights. The brake pedal is pressed which triggers the brake on off switch mounted to the pedal arm. This then triggers the shift lock actuator on the steering column to allow you to shift from park.
Your concern is intermittent so that rules out the fuse. this leaves a wiring short at the brake on off switch or the switch is bad. Next time the brake lamps fail to operate check and see if there is power to the LG/R wire at the switch. If there is not, then check for a bad power wire. If there is power but no power on the LG wire, then the switch is bad. If there is power then the signal out wire is damaged.
