Thank you for using Just Answer!

Can you take the barrels off that gun and look on the watertable (the part of the gun's frame that was covered by the barrels). Tell me what markings you see there (the serial number and the grade are there). Grades are like "0", "00", "A2", etc.

Or you can take a good close photo of the watertable and attach it using the paper clip icon.

Serial No. 1582 PAT MCH 29,85 JULY, 13, 86 OCT.5,86 Letters PE on underside of barrel mechanism.
Expert:  Philip Van Cleave replied 2 years ago.
I believe that gun was made in 1919, not 1918, based on my resources.

Do you see a grade marking on the top of the right barrel? Like "Field grade"?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
No inscriptions on either barrel, very careful inspection. On sight table its marked, Hunter Arms Co. Makers Fulton, NY. LC Smith on a side plate above triggers, some grouse and other decorative swirls also. Stock is in flawless condition, though some loss of Damascus marking on barrels with small pits.

Will take me some time, I'll get to it. RB

Philip,

I have uploaded 9 photos to: http://www.mediafire.com/?cjz99e3lachn8hc,ys9dr0ga8zlt69g,4qcd4tbmlsxipxe,jz72bc9jlq1dno3,6k06gnu4vrrq676,fq5bkqj5b7o5cr5,4fyn94bwgudf139,o1yjbom9jnyw2c4,cqkw6kigm3910bb

I also emailed the same photos to: XXX@XXXXXX.XXX

After carefully studying those photos, I believe you have the "Pigeon" Grade. But that would be on a gun made before 1913. I found that your serial number could have been made in 1898. How sure are you that your gun was made during WW I?

Philip
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
We have no knowledge of manufacture date. My understanding was that it was built to my grandfather's body measurements and presented as a gift to him in his middle years (perhaps the early '20s) in Helena, Montana. Main objective is evaluation for sale. Best regards, Roger
Expert:  Philip Van Cleave replied 2 years ago.
I want to be as sure as possible I have the right model. So, about what year was your grandfather born?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
Hi Phil, I believe Grandfather, John Fortunatus McLaren was born Jun.6, 1870, but when it was given to him is not clear. Didn't mean to get you involved in geneology too, as I know so little about it. Best regards, Roger
Expert:  Philip Van Cleave replied 2 years ago.
That means that it would have been around 1898 when he got that gun!

There were around 1,200 of the Pigeon Grade Hunter Arms shotguns made from 1895 to 1912. In the catalog back then the wood was described as "a choice piece of walnut, beautifully figured. The richness of the color in these stocks is superb."

Wholesale/Dealer values (what a dealer would offer you, add around 20% for retail values):

Excellent: $ --
Very Good: $4,500-$6,000
Good: $3,000-$3,500
Fair: $1,750-$2,500
Poor: $1,650

I hope this helps. If you are satisfied with my answer, please click the "accept" button. Thanks!

Phil, Thanks for your thorough evaluation. As a final opinion, could you speculate on which condition category these pictures might roughly indicate for this gun. Best, Roger
Expert:  Philip Van Cleave replied 2 years ago.
Roger,

Even with that nice photos, it's hard to tell condition. How much of the original finish, percentage wise, would you guess is on the gun and stock? Is there any rust? Any pitting do to rust, if yes? How does the barrel look - bright and clean, rusty, pitted, dark?

Philip
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
Phillip, Answering: Original finish about 80% with a few small pits on outside of barrels. Inside barrels are bright and shiny, no flaws. Stock is 100% as original, no cracks etc. Still seeking an asking price for a beginning point, just an approximation? Original leather case with shearling lining and cleaning rods included. Many thanks, Roger
Expert:  Philip Van Cleave replied 2 years ago.
If that gun was made before 1898, it would be in very good condition. That gun looks like it was made just after that "antique" cutoff date, so modern gun ratings apply. In which case, the condition would be "good."

I would ask $3,000 wholesale (if you are selling to a dealer) or $3,600 retail.

Thanks Phil, That gives me something to work with and start from. Many thanks for your council. Best, Roger
