My 23 year old daughter receives Medicaid (NY). Can we

Customer Question

My 23 year old daughter receives Medicaid (NY). Can we voluntarily drop her from our private insurance so she can get a Medicaid managed health plan instead of straight Medicaid? She is not covered for prescriptions under our plan. Straight Medicaid is not covering all her daily meds. Thanks.

Yes, you can.

This makes sense (given your specific situation - the prescriptions not being covered by either the employer plan or "straight" Medicaid)

The only "heads-up" I would provide (may be stating the obvious) is that there may be situations (other medical services) ... where having the employer plan being primary and then Medicaid being secondary and covering, say, copays - as long as performed by medicaid providers.... where having that primary/secondary arrangement could be beneficial.

But yes, only you can discern the tradeoff. There are certainly situations where PRESCRIPTIONS are a big piece of the pie, where what you've mentioned may be the best strategy.
