(1) a + b = 72
(2) a - b = 48

From (1) we can say a = 72 - b, and we can then substitute this value for a into (2)

72 - b - b = 48
=> 72 - 2b = 48
=> -2b = 48 - 72
=> -2b = -24
=> b = -24/-2
=> b = 12

That means that:
a = 72 - 12
=> a = 60.

Check:
60 + 12 = 72 (as required)
60 - 12 = 48 (as required)
