If routine lubricating eye drops have not helped then you can consult a cornea specialist so as to get the cornea evaluated in detail under slit lamp . In diabetes the superficial layer of the cornea may undergo recurrent erosion thus giving rise to such symptoms.
For moderate to severe dry eyes which do not respond to routine line of treatment , punctal plugs are tried. Here silicone plugs are inserted into the tiny openings in the eyelids through which tears normally flow out.
This will help the eye to retain the existing tear film thus giving relief from dry eyes.
Itching can be seen in case of blepharitis apart from allergic conjunctivitis.
Blepharitis is treated with warm compresses twice a day, gentle lid scrub and massage with 50:50 diluted baby shampoo ( applied to the lid outer margin with the help of a Q-tip).
