Dr. Rick :

Hi. I'm online and happy to answer your question today.

Dr. Rick :

There can be a number of reasons why your eyes are dilated.

Dr. Rick :

Are both your eyes dilated the same amount?

Dr. Rick :

Is your vision affected in either eye?

Customer :

let me check

Dr. Rick :

Do you take any medications or have any medical problems?

Customer :

seem to be

Dr. Rick :

Ok.

Customer :

i take several meds but nothing new

Customer :

ive had a stiff neck today and have been smelling smoke on and off for a week

Dr. Rick :

The most common cause of having both pupils dilated without having any other ocular or systemic problems is some type of compound getting into the eyes or the diet that would enlarge the pupil. Any atropine like agent could do it....

Dr. Rick :

I do not think that your pupil dilation would be related to a mild stiff neck or the smelling of smoke in the absence of any other physical findings.

Customer :

so something i ate?

Dr. Rick :

In the vast majority of cases this is nothing to be concerned about. However if you are worried you could have an ophthalmologist take a look at you. This is something that is really beyond the training and ability of an optometerist.

Dr. Rick :

Yes. It could conceivably be something you ate.

Dr. Rick :

Does that make sense to you?

Customer :

not really i didnt know i was talking to an eye dr

Dr. Rick :

I

Dr. Rick :

I've been a retina surgeon for twenty years.......there are about 5 eye doctors on this system....

Customer :

arent there many things that could effect ur eyes

Dr. Rick :

Your issue really falls under the umbrella of an ophthalmologist.

Dr. Rick :

Yes.....There are tons of things that can affect your eyes and in cases like yours the cause is usually not found and things return to normal. From what you have posted I do not believe you need an extensive workup or even a visit to an ophthalmologist.

Customer :

ok

Dr. Rick :

I think you will be fine -- no need to worry about having a brain tumor :)

Dr. Rick :

Let me know if I can do anything else to help you. Have a great day!
