Dr. Rick :

Hi. I'm online and happy to answer your question today.

Dr. Rick :

Are you asking about the retinal condition called stargardt's disease?

Dr. Rick :

I am a retina specialist and can help you with this issue. Who do you know that is suffering from this condition?

Customer:

yes

Customer:

I am

Dr. Rick :

you are pretty old to have just been diagnosed with this condition....how long have you had stargardt's?

Customer:

I have this disease and want to know mif there is ant treatment to help my vision

Customer:

I have had it about Five ( 5) years that i know of

Dr. Rick :

During the almost two decades that I have been practicing as a retina specialist I have been hoping and waiting for an effective treatment for this disease. I am very sorry to report that, at this time, there is nothing that can be done anywhere in the world.

Dr. Rick :

There has been some recent good news however concern stem cell treatment

Dr. Rick :

And there is talk of a possible human trial with a drug from a company called Advanced Cell Technology in the next year or so....

Dr. Rick :

Right now, though, there is nothing that can be done.

Dr. Rick :

Are you under the care of a retina surgeon?

Customer:

I am a Veteran Disable, will VA pay for this treatment are medication

Customer:

I am not under the care of a retina surgeon

Dr. Rick :

Having worked in the VA hospital system in the 90's, I very much doubt it.

Dr. Rick :

If someone has told you that you have stargardt's disease, you really need to be examined by a retina doctor to confirm it....there are many other retinal conditions that might be confused with it.

Customer:

i have been to a retinal Doctor that is how i know i have this problem, I went to IU Hospital Indianapolis IN for an exam.

Dr. Rick :

That is very good. You can be fairly sure that you have the right diagnosis. The bad news? There is no effective treatment at all.......sorry about that :(

Dr. Rick :

Does this make sense to you?

Customer:

Thank you ffor the information that you have given me

Dr. Rick :
