I stuck a mascara wand in my eye yesterday; and today it is

Resolved Question:

I stuck a mascara wand in my eye yesterday; and today it is killing me. I have no insurance to go to the ER. I thought by sleeping and keeping it closed it would heal overnight. The pain is high up near the crease on the far right side. If I keep it closed, it doesn't hurt.

Dr. James :

Hello.

Dr. James :

How many hours has it been since the accident?

Customer:

hello

Customer:

since about 11 am yesterday

Dr. James :

It is possible you could have scratched your cornea. Most corneal scratches heal very rapidly, usually in a day or so.

Dr. James :

It is possible you have a foreign body in the eye from the mascara wand.

Dr. James :

I recommend you see an eye doctor for an evaluation.

Customer:

I don't think so, I looked. The eye is very red and swollen and tearing.

Dr. James :

You may considering seeing an optometrist.

Customer:

If I had insurance I would.

Customer:

should i put a patch over it as they did when i scratched the cornea before? I know they put some sort of numbing agent in the eye

Dr. James :

for most scratches, it would have been significantly better by now if it happened 11am yesterday. That is why I suggest that there may be persistently irritating your eyes.

Customer:

ok, thanks.

Dr. James :

Most optometrist have very reasonable cash prices.

Dr. James :

You may try the traditional retail places such as costco, walmart, sears, etc.

Customer:

I thought I would have to go to an opthamologist.

Dr. James :

They are usually open on saturdays.

Customer:

ok, thanks XXXXX

Dr. James :

Yes, ophthalmologists are good, but if cost is an issue, an optometrist is good to screen for serious problems.
