Yesterday my eye was red and scratchy, I thought I had something

This answer was rated:

Yesterday my eye was red and scratchy, I thought I had something in my eye. I slept it off last night and woke up and had more eye gunk then usual but my eye feels back to normal. Can this be caused by dry eyes? Or does pink eye last only one day?

Dr. James :

Hello.

Dr. James :

Do you wear contact lenses?

Customer:

No i dont

Dr. James :

How does that eye look now?

Customer:

it is a light pink, I should have mentioned I spend alot of time on the computer at work

Dr. James :

does this scratchy feeling happen often? only on one eye?

Customer:

it has happened before, only when I am at work. I work at a camp away from home. It has never happened at home

Dr. James :

The scratchy sensation and mucous in the eye is an indication of some irritation to the eye. It can be due to dry eyes as you mentioned. Also, it can be due to eye allergies or something in the environment causing irritation.

Dr. James :

Since this only happens at work and not home, it is likely something to do with the environment.

Dr. James :

Artificial tears can help with the irritation For eye allergies, you can try an over the counter drop called Zaditor.

Customer:

thats what I thought I just wanted to make sure it wasnt pink eye

Dr. James :

with pink eye, it is usually related to being in contact with someone having pink eye or having a recent viral cold.

Dr. James :

Pink eye also last much longer, 2-3 weeks on average.

Customer:
