Ask an Eye Doctor and Get an Answer ASAP
Hi. I'm online and happy to answer your question today.
Yes, it is possible that she has ocular herpes even at her age.
Can my granddaughter have herpies in her eye at only three years of age, and are her symtoms correct of the virus and what treatement and dangers are there?
Is your granddaughter being treated by an ophthalmologist?
No a normal GP
Ok. Well, the first thing you should do is get her in to see an ophthalmologist, a pediatric ophthalmologist if possible. A GP really doesn't have the training or equipment to diagnose or treat ocular herpes.
I live in Pretoria, would you be able to recomment an ophalmologist that can help me?
There are a number of different herpes viruses that can attack the eye, as well as other viruses. It is important to be sure of what you are dealing with and, even more importantly, what structure or structures of the eye are involved in the infection. Viruses can attack the conjunctiva, cornea, anterior chamber, uvea (iris etc), vitreous, retina or choroid. A GP would not be able to tell these structures apart.
Let me check for you. Be right back.....

It is not clear if any of these doctors are pediatric ophthalmologists. However they will be able to figure out just exactly what is going on with your daughters eyes.
With her taking these tablets for herpies, 1 every 4 hours, do her any harm if it is not herpies
I ment granddaughter :) It's 3:30 am here.....you caught me getting up to let out the dogs and I don't think my fingers are awake yet :o)
What is the name of the tablets?
oh dear i dont know what they are called. They are used to treat type 1 and 2, but i know that doesn't help much!
Are they called acyclovir?
Ok....oral antivirals such as acyclovir are fairly safe medicines. It really shouldn't hurt her to continue taking them at this point until she can get in to see one of the eye specialists.
Does this make sense to you?
Are you still there?
yes thank you, XXXXX XXXXX just so worried that this will have lasting damage and after talking to my daughter about it yesterday she does not seem to be too concerned about it,
I think you are correct to be concerned. Any type of serious infection, especially in young children, can have lifelong visual consequences. I'm glad you are helping out.....
She said she took her to an eye institute and they said the same thing, but as far a i know both diagnosis have been just by looking and no actual tests have been done!
How is this tested to confirm the correct diagnosis?
At the eye institute this diagnosis could be made on the grounds of clinical exam alone without any type of special imaging or testing.......
Herpes of the eye has specific features and history. Yes, special lab tests can be done but they are rarely helpful or needed beyond a complete eye exam. Perhaps the GP is only following the treatment recommendations of the eye specialist since the eye doc is so far away.....if so, that wouldn't be such a bad treatment plan as long as some sort of followup is scheduled with the ophthalmologist.
Is there anything else you would like to ask me this morning?
I guess you have stepped away from your computer.
Thank you for your advise, i don't know if i am feeling better or more concerned!! Sorry i woke you up so early. Most appriciated, have a wonderful day and thank you again
