Hi. I'm online and happy to answer your question today.
Contact lens use, especially old contact lens use is one of the highest risk factors when it comes to getting a corneal ulcer.
I am sorry but that does'nt really answer my question. I have read on line about corneal ulcers and as far as I understand, corneal ulcers are common when the user wears the contact lens overnight or for long periods of time. ( Which I don't ) I wear mine for 12 hours tops and they are cleaned and stored propertly overnight until the next morning. As long as I keep them clean and in good condition what is the real risk of anything happening?
Sorry about that. My power went out in the middle of answering your question.
What bad could happen from wearing contact lenses like you are doing? Well I have, personally, had patients who have lost their eye.....had to cut it out and throw it in a bucket and fit them with an artificial, plastic eye. I've also had patients who, after spending tens of thousands of dollars and months/years of treatment, ended up with a eye that was legally blind.
The material that the contact lenses are made of deteriorates over time, becomes less oxygen permeable and can warp/tear causing problems with fit. They are like anything else, medicines, fresh food, etc....they go bad after a certain time.
I understand that over the last ten years you have not any problems using your contact lenses the way you have and I am glad to hear that. You have been very lucky. Using the same idea, there have been people who walk through a mine field and don't get blown up. However, you can understand that waking though a mine field is risky behavior and, sooner or later, they will step on a mine.
In my opinion, you are doing the same thing. I agree with your eye doctor. Any savings you may be obtaining by using your contacts for such an extended time if not worth it.
Does this make sense to you?
