Hi, quick question about personal genetics regarding iris color.

Resolved Question:

Hi, quick question about personal genetics regarding iris color. My right iris is exactly one half blue and one half brown/green, while the left iris is entirely blue.

I was wondering, what the name of this genetic "condition" and what it is that causes it?

Dr. Rick :

Hi. I'm online and happy to answer your question today.

Dr. Rick :

iris color is not a simple genetic thing....at least not in the sense that we understand it.

Dr. Rick :

It is not uncommon for folks to have varied colored iris'.

Customer:

Cool, but do we have an idea about what causes it?......

Dr. Rick :

A number of conditions can cause this: Fuchs heterochromia, pigment dispersion syndrome, iris melanoma, iris cysts, Sturge-Weber syndrome etc. There is also a congenital condition that is autosomal dominant, meaning many offspring get the iris color issues.

Dr. Rick :

It is caused by a difference in the amount of pigment, called melanin, in your iris.
