detached retina associated with a pit in the optic nerve

Resolved Question:

My son age 25, was diagnosed yesterday with a a text book case of a detached retina associated with a pit in the optic nerve. The prognosis with surgery is worrisome. We were told that this is a rare condition and that most opthamologists would only see one or two cases in a decade. Who is the best surgeon in Canada, USA or India to deal with this type of issue. The doctor is proposing a victrectomy with a some laser treatment and a gas bubble to hold the retina in place

Hello and thanks for your question. I can only speak to the surgeons in the US as this is where I practice and have the most experience. There are many excellent academic eye institutions where your son can receive top-notch care for his detached retina. The Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland; the Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Bascom-Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, Florida; Casey Eye Institute in Portland, Oregon. These are all excellent academic institutions that I can recommend to you where you will get the best care for his eyes.
