Resolved Question:

I have a friend who had lasik. Her left eye remains uncorrected. She is curious: will PRK offer any further benefit/harm?

Dr. Rick :

Hi. I'm online and happy to answer your question today.

Dr. Rick :

are you available to chat?

JACUSTOMER-r5k2m1w7- :

yeah buddy. how are you Dr?

Dr. Rick :

Hanging in there watching the snow come down outside my window.

JACUSTOMER-r5k2m1w7- :

same same

Dr. Rick :

She wants to have PRK in the lasik eye? Has she been told that her cornea is too thin for a Lasik touchup

JACUSTOMER-r5k2m1w7- :

she is Russian.

JACUSTOMER-r5k2m1w7- :

so she doesn't clearly communicate

Dr. Rick :

except in Russian, eh?

JACUSTOMER-r5k2m1w7- :

is touch up the initial thought.

JACUSTOMER-r5k2m1w7- :

da! :)

JACUSTOMER-r5k2m1w7- :

ochen harashod!

Dr. Rick :

I don't know any Russian, except for what I've learned on James Bond movies.

Dr. Rick :

Touch up is a better option if she has enough corneal thickness left. PRK is just lasik without the flap

JACUSTOMER-r5k2m1w7- :

lesson for today.... from this James.... da= yes; ochen = very ; harashod= good

Dr. Rick :

See. Now I don't have to learn anything else all day.

JACUSTOMER-r5k2m1w7- :

always we must continue to learn.... or revisit the oldies but goody pearles

Dr. Rick :

truth

JACUSTOMER-r5k2m1w7- :

so PRK could be an option IF the corneal flap lacks integrity

Dr. Rick :

I think your friend should see about having a "touch up" done on her original lasik. It is easy to pull up the flap even years later.

JACUSTOMER-r5k2m1w7- :

does anyone in the TN, VA, Carolinas still do PRK ?

JACUSTOMER-r5k2m1w7- :

ok... i understand

Dr. Rick :

Maybe, maybe not. Once again you have to make sure the PRK doesn't go all the way through the flap. Takes an experienced surgeon and careful preop measurements

JACUSTOMER-r5k2m1w7- :

ok...

Dr. Rick :

And, now, the obligatory word from our sponsors: :o)
