Resolved Question:

Good afternoon-I just noticed a blood vessel in my eye has burst. The eye is itching, but I have seasonal allergies. What do I do before I get to the doctor. Any information would be great. Thanks A. Atencio

Thank you--

I have never had this happen before--could being tired cause this?

Dr. Rick :

No. not being tired. You have allergies (itching) and have broken a small blood vessel in your eye. It is called a subconjuctival hemorrhage. It is not as dangerous as it looks!

Dr. Rick :

It will not cause any harm to your eye and doesn't even need to be seen by an ophthalmologist.

Dr. Rick :

Like a bruise elsewhere it will fade over a few weeks. It looks so bad because the skin on the eye is thin and the red color of the blood shows through, unlike the thick skin on your arm that makes the blood look purple.

Dr. Rick :

take an otc allergy medicine like zertec etc to help with your symptoms and you can use natural tears 3-4x/day to soothe your eye.

Dr. Rick :

does this make sense?

JACUSTOMER-0b0u8urr- :

Yes--thank you; sorry I caught a little freaked out! This makes sense.

Dr. Rick :

I hope this has been helpful. If you would be so kind as to press the accept button so I may get credit, I would appreciate it. have a good evening
