I assume this is on the white of the eye ? But, where exactly is it ? Near the colored portion (iris and cornea) or near the skin on the outer edge ?

you are probably seeing something referred to as a pingueculum. This is a growth due to sun exposure and may seem like it came overnight, but typically it is a slow growing lesion.
