Customer Question

My left eye socket aches. I had a floater last night - it's gone today. I have a slight film over the eye. I am flying to Hawaii on Saturday and was concerned. Went to Opthalmologist today. Not retinal-do have start of cataracts which explains slight film. He wants me to have an MRI for Optic Neuritis. I think he's crazy. I have no other symptoms- just that my eye socket aches. I will hav the MRI - but would like a second opinion. What would an aching eye socket indicate with no direct eye pain?

What is your age? have you had any vision loss? did he find that your pupils reacted abnormally? does it hurt when you move your eye in different directions? do you have any sinus issues, like allergies, infections?

Customer: replied 5 years ago.

I am 66. My pupils and everything else reacted normally. My eye itself doesn't hurt - just the entire socket. I don't have sinus problems, don't have allergies and do not have any infections that I know of. I have been sneezing a little but things are blooming a lot here in AZ (maybe I do have minor allergies:o) My eye seems a little cloudier than usual. For a short time today I had a slight headache - I had twinges going down into my cheek and up into my forehead a couple of times - but I have a job that requires me to read small print and work on the computer.

I did wear my contact lenses on Saturday. I wear them rarely because I can't really see as well with them as I see with my glasses. I was wondering if I just strained my eyes?

Hello again

He may be a bit paranoid with ordering an MRI but it is a safe procedure and can help point to a source for the vague symptoms you have. I think the likelihood of optic neuritis is very low. Optic neuritis causes pain in the socket, particularly bad when you move the eyes around, fuzzy or clouded vision that comes on pretty rapidly. It is also low on the list since you are a bit older than the typical ON patient. Anyhow, it is better safe than sorry, I wish you well, Dr. Stevens

Thank you ! One last thing - I am flying on Saturday - if he finds nothing during the MRI am I likely to experience any difficulties/

No problem, I dont think flying will be an issue this weekend, I am pretty sure MRI will be normal, perhaps show some signs of sinus inflammation, Regards
