I am a German citizen and have applied for US citizenship, however, I want to keep my German citizenship, i.e., I would like to have double citizenship. My application for US citizenship is filed to the point that I just got the invitation for finger printing. What do I have to do now to keep my German citizenship? Kind regards, XXXXX XXXXX
If you willingly apply for a foreign citizenship and obtain it, the German citizenship is automatically lost. If you obtain a foreign citizenship without an application for naturalization, you remain a German citizen. Loss of citizenship can be avoided by obtaining a special permit ("Beibehaltungsgenehmigung") before you are naturalized in a foreign country. For information on this procedure documentation is available in German only through this weblink: http://www.germany.info/Vertretung/usa/de/05__Dienstleistungen/02__Staatsangehoerigkeit/02__Beibehaltung/__Beibehaltung.html
