If there was a will leaving everything to the surviving spouse, the will still needs to go through probate and depending on the total value of the estate determines what type of probate is required (small estate or full court probate). When probate is filed ALL potential heirs must be notified so they can challenge the will if they choose to do so, which is why you received notice.
