What do the Red and Black in the Les Misérables song represent?

Hello, George and welcome back to Just Answer!

Thank you for your insightful question. My name is XXXXX XXXXX I will be happy to help you.

First, here is a link to the lyrics of the song:
http://www.songmeanings.net/songs/view/126352/?&specific_com=73014811058

As you can see, the Red and Black have multiple representations in this song:

"Red - the blood of angry men!
Black - the dark of ages past!
Red - a world about to dawn!
Black - the night that ends at last!"

--------

"GRANTAIRE
Red...

MARIUS
I feel my soul on fire!

GRANTAIRE
Black...

MARIUS
My world if she's not there!

ALL
Red...

MARIUS
The color of desire!

ALL
Black...

MARIUS
The color of despair!"
-------------------------------------
So, basically, Red represents love, the future, the dawning of a new day/new and better world, and Black represents the anguish he feels in his love for her, the horrors of war, and if she does not return his love.

Were red and black the flag colors of the revolution?

Hello again, George and thanks for your reply.

Sorry for the delayed response. I was offline when you posted back and have just returned.

The initial color of the flag of the French Revolution was red, to signify the shedding of the martyrs' blood in the incident at Champs-de-Mars in 1791; however, the colors red and black symbolize anarchy. You can read more here: http://www.crwflags.com/fotw/flags/fr_revol.html#red
