I have heard about fried turkey for Thanksgiving. Are fried

Resolved Question:

I have heard about fried turkey for Thanksgiving. Are fried turkeys greasy? How do they compare with oven roasted turkeys?

Hello, welcome to Just Answer. If done right (oil hot enough and not cook too long) it will not be greasy inside (of course the skin will be). The skin contact with the hot oil and form a seal, preventing the oil from penetrating the meat. The result is better than the oven as the meat can't evaporate much of his water with the skin sealed.

That method is VERY dangerous and require much care and watching as the amount of oil needed is large. Outdoor, with no dogs or kid running around and a good fire extinguisher. Ideally, you start to do it with someone that made one many time before.

I have read about indoor countertop turkey friers. They are fully inclosed and use much less oil than the outdoors type. The articles say that they are quite safe. I am thinking of buying one, the one made by butterball. What do you think?

I never operated one but they sure are less dangerous. That said you wont get result that much better than a well made one in the oven. The counter top cooker don't work the same as with oil. They don't seal the skin, they just keep the humidity high in the device while using powerful infrared to keep the skin from getting wet. The taste will also be different (think oven French fries vs oil cooked French fries). For reference, this is the model i talk about http://www.amazon.com/Masterbuilt-20100809-Butterball-Oil-Free-Electric/dp/B002JM1ZN8 (it use no oil, the taste difference should not matter if you don't eat the skin).

I was not referring to a countertop cooker. I was reffering to a counter top frier. They use oil. Butterball makes one.  What do you think?

Might be that one then? http://www.amazon.com/Masterbuilt-20010109-Butterball-Professional-Electric/dp/B002JM1ZMY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1289343594&sr=1-1 . I am not sure the sealing effect would manifest if not deep fried completely in very hot oil as that operation need to happen quickly, plus it stay as dangerous as any fryer using oil. I have never used one, perhaps it's working very well also.
