My wife informs me, confidently, that you can use this starch based product, called 'Meringue Powder', available here: http://www.wilton.com/yearbook/productinfo/meringue.cfm
She also advises mixing the sugar in more slowly, adding tiny amounts of salt and lemon juice at the same time.
