I was diagnosed six weeks ago with an underactive thyroid,

Customer Question

I was diagnosed six weeks ago with an underactive thyroid, TSH was eleven. I have had no improvement in my symptoms. I am going back for more blood tests tomorrow. Are there any questions I should ask my doctor?

Hello

What is your TSH now, after treatment.

Is it below 2.5

If not, and if it has been 6 weeks, you need an increase in your thyroid replacement dose.

The optimal level of TSH in treated people is actually about .8 to 1.

Above this can still be hypothyroid.

If you have not YET been treated, this is inappropriate, and you need to ask your doctor why.

I will have blood tests tomorrow to have it checked. I was only diagnosed six weeks ago.

And with a TSH of 11 treatment should have been started.

That wasted 6 weeks if not.

Otherwise, my answer above is the same.

Sorry, I have been taking 25 mcg Eltroxin.

Then, if you still have symptoms, and if your TSH is above 2.5 you need an increase.

That is likely.

Positive rating please.

Come back as needed.

Ok, are there any questions I should be asking my doctor? Anything about vit b12, d, iron, adrenal fatigue??
Expert:  DrThomasMd replied 11 months ago.

Please see my very first response.

This is not caused by B12, iron deficiency, or adrenal fatigue.

This is caused by auto antibodies to the thyroid gland.

Adrenal function and affect thyroid function, but does not cause hypothyrodism, ever.

Good luck.
