Customer Question

I am 26 years old and a male. I have no health issues. Ten years ago, when I was 16 years old, I used to workout and weight lift. During this time, I took a protein shake called Optimum Nutrition Pro Complex PM. I took this protein shake for one month continuously. Then, five months on and off, ( some nights I took it and other nights I did not take it). I completed four boxes in the duration of these five months. Each box of Optimum Nutrition Pro Complex PM has thirty servings in it. I used to take one serving in milk at night, before I went to bed. I have come across a fear from the ingredients in this protein powder. I was young at the time and did not read the ingredients. Here are the ingredients: Pro Complex™ PM is an Augmented Protein System (APS) specifically formulated to help support muscle recovery and repair while you sleep. The APS in Pro Complex™ PM includes a blend of complete (Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium and Sodium Caseinates plus Whey Protein Isolate) and partially hydrolyzed proteins (Glutamine Peptides, Hydrolized Whey Peptides) as well as isolated amino acids like L-Glutamine, L-Arginine, L-Taurine and the three Branched Chain Amino Acids (BCAAs). Together these components deliver an almost time-released stream of essential nitrogen to help support recovery throughout the night while you sleep. Are any of these ingredients in the blend steroids or hormones? Did any of these ingredients convert to a hormone such as testosterone or growth hormone? Did they increase the testosterone level in my body? Did any of these ingredients affect my heart or face in any way? (I can send you pictures of my face from when I was 15 to now for you to make sure there was no abnormal change). I also asked another endocrinologist about these ingredients. He said that this blend did not do anything to me. He said that ecdysterone was meant to increase protein absorption, but it did not do anything because recent studies have proven that ecdysterone does nothing to the body. I wanted to confirm this from another endocrinologist. I have been living in a horrible fear and I cannot function normally in my day to day life because of this fear. My health is perfect. I have no health issues. I get routine check ups- blood and urine as well. I have perfect health and no concerns. I have gotten heart check ups as well. A ECHO and an EKG as well as a 24 hour holter test. The cardiologists said that I am perfectly normal and that I have no heart conditions.

Hello from JustAnswer.

To address each question -

Did any of these ingredients affect me in any negative way?

No, there is no evidence that any of these ingredients would be harmful. Of course, it is possible that someone can be sensitive to many substances, such as an allergy, but if you were to have had such sensitivity, it would have affected you at the time, and not be a cause of any problems at this point.

Are any of these ingredients in the blend steroids or hormones?

Not really. The ecdysterone has a steroid structure, but it has no steroid activity in humans. Your doctor is correct that the studies do not show any effect of the ecdysterone on humans. The isoflavonoids also have some mild hormonal activity, but not sufficient to be a concern.

Did any of these ingredients convert to a hormone such as testosterone or growth hormone?

Not really. Ultimately, testosterone (and all steroid hormones) is derived from cholesterol, but the cholesterol in this product will not result in making more testosterone and if the product had not been taken, your body would have used other sources of cholesterol. Similarly, growth hormone is constructed from amino acids, so is derived from proteins in the diet, but the protein in this product will not increase the level of growth hormone and if the product had not been taken, your body would have used other sources of protein

Did they increase the testosterone level in my body?

No, as noted above.

Did any of these ingredients affect my heart or face in any way?
No, there is no evidence that these ingredients would adversely affect your heart or face.

If I can provide any further information, please let me know.
