I was recently diagnosed with a TIA..even after all testing

Customer Question

I was recently diagnosed with a TIA..even after all testing came back ok..I followed up with my family doctor and everything seems fine except he told me I have a goiter..My thyroid level is 2.5 and have had hair thinning for years, weight goes up and down and I have absolutely no energy..sleep patterns are also off..Could I still have hypothyroidism even though my tests are normal?

Hello from JA

Great question

Was this a TSH of 2.5
And how long ago was that done?

Customer replied 319 days and 21 hours ago.

yes as far as I know it was a TSH. and it was done on June 1st...All my doctor said was your thyroid level is a 2.5 and that it was normal..then found the goiter..Ive had this goiter for some time and also had a sonogram done like 3 years ago and it came back ok..I'm just concerned because of the weakness and hair loss and also the TIA episode they said I had ..I feel it all has to do with my thyroid..I've also been on weight watchers for weight loss and its not working..

OK
A TIA is not from the thyroid.

That needs to be investigated and you need an ultrasound of the carotid arteries. Maybe of the heart as well, to make sure there are not clots.

YOu need to repeat your TSH.

New guidelines say 3 and above is hypothyroid, and more and more experts will begin treatment at 2.5 or beyond if there are symptoms.

I suggest that your doctor might not be up on the new developments, most are not.

So you could see an endocrinologist who might start a low dose of medication to help with the symptoms.
