Hello, I am a 33yr old male who is not a drinker. My Pancreas

Customer Question

Hello,
I am a 33yr old male who is not a drinker. My Pancreas hurts. I went to the hospital about a year ago and the doctor said my pancreas is trying to digest itself. What should I do to feel better. I started a new job and my insurance won't kick in for a month. Is there something I could ask a doctor to prescribe for me?

Please advise. Thanks in advance for all your help.

DrPauline :

Hello, where are you experiencing the pain?

Were you diagnosed with pancreatitis?

DrPauline :

What investigations did you have last year?

DrPauline :

Can you list your current medication?

Customer :

Pain- in the middle of my chest

Customer :

I went to the hospital the same day I sent this message to you. The did diagnose me with Pancreatitis. The said my Lypase levels were over 2000. I was in the hospital for 3 days. Is there anything I can do moving forward to prevent this from happening?

DrPauline : Hello, do you drink any alcohol?
Customer :

No Alcohol at all.

Customer :

They said I don't have any Gallstones as well

DrPauline : Did you have any investigations such as mrcp?
Customer :

What is MCRP?

DrPauline : it is a scan...MRI which looks at gallbladder and pancreas
Customer :

I had an ultrasound done

DrPauline : Do you take any medication before this started?
Customer :

All I take is Zyrtec (allergy Med daily)

DrPauline : That drug is not one that I would commonly associate with pancreatitis.
DrPauline : Pancreatitis does have many possible causes, but in some people a specific cause cannot be identified.
DrPauline : Yiu need to
DrPauline : Be under the care of a specialist hepatobiliary doctor.
DrPauline : Did your doctor say how effective your pancreas is working at the moment?
Customer :

No they discharged me and weren't very sure why this happened. They said it could be internal plumbing or microscopic stones in the gallbladder that cannot be seen that irritates me

Customer :
DrPauline : That is true, and that is why more thorough scan is often done, but this will cost money.
Customer :

I am going to see my primary care doctor today is there anything I should ask him? I am going to see a GI doctor as recommended to me next week. Any Q's for him?

DrPauline : The difficulty for you now is that this may impact on your insurance cover as a previous condition, and pancreatitis can often recur.
DrPauline : The most important thing is to keep an eye on any potential complications which may include cysts in the pancreas so you need to ask what follow up care you will be getting.
DrPauline : You should have blood tests to check for high triglycerides
DrPauline : And also tests to check for auto immune disease
DrPauline : Your doctors should have assessed the severity of the pancreatitis, and this will affect the prognosis
Customer :

I appreciate your help. Thank you

DrPauline : Even though you did not have alcohol induced pancreatitis, you need to avoid alcohol for the next few months.
DrPauline : I hope this was helpful, please rate the answer or use reply if you need more information.
