Customer Question

Good day - hope you can provide some advice/insight around thyroid function. I have been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder 3 yrs ago as I was/and still am experiencing intense physical anxiety. The immediate thought when it started occurring was that it may be my thyroid as my mother and 2 of her siblings suffer from over active thyroids. I have done 3 thyroid function tests in the past 2 years which all came back normal (have been on a number of SSRI's, benzo's and beta blockers). The last function test I did a week ago as part of some other blood tests showed that my thyroid is overactive (based on TSH and Free T4).

My question is if it is possible to suffer from an overactive thyroid even when the function test shows a normal results? I have used Proprananlol and SSRI's when other tests were done but not for the last one, but as far as I understand Beta Blockers cannot impact on the test results. (I do not appear to have any physical symptoms of Graves disease, I only have severe physical anxiety symptoms i.e. sweaty hands, insomnia, nervousness, hot flushes, inability to relax).

I can only get to see an Endo in the next 4 weeks, are there any other tests I need to ask for in the meantime that my GP can arrange to confirm that I definitely have a Thyroid problem. I am hoping that my anxiety condition over the past few years can be attributed to my thyroid.

Kind regards

DrPauline : Hello, do you have the exact results of the tsh and free T4?
Customer : TSH is 0.4 and free T4 is 22
DrPauline : Your blood results are in keeping with hyperthyroidism, Your current symptoms of anxiety are also in keeping with hyperthyroidism however it is less common to get symptoms of hyperthyroidism with normal blood tests. In fact many people with hyperthyroidism often have no symptoms initially.
DrPauline : The propranolol would not interfere with blood tests. People can have anxiety without being hyperthyroid so I would not focus too much on the past but instead look forward to getting the thyroid under control and hopefully your anxiety will also reduce.
