I have a small translation company when we hire interpreter on a need basis. Once a month....or so.....are they independent contractors or should they be treated as empoyees?

Do you have a contract with the interpreter in which they are designated as independent contractors? Are they paid hourly or on salary? Do they receive any benefits, such as insurance, retirement or PTO?
