I took a customer service position at Blue Cross of Nebraska. The position involved a four week training class to prepare agents to answer benefit questions by the consumer. A complete section of the class pertained to those with mental health diagnosis. Each time the instructor would mention someone calling in with "specifically" Bipolar disease, she would literally scream, raise her hands and call them crazy. I was diagnosed with bipolar disease 15 year ago; I am a former LPN; I am medication compliant; I completed a BS in Healthcare management with a 4.0 in my major and I am not "crazy!" I felt so belittled and small. I was frustrated with the way she portrayed those of us who suffer this serious illness. Moreover, I did not, after everything she did, feel comfortable telling my boss I have bipolar disease. I knew I would eventually end up getting fire, especially for rocking the boat with a trainer that had been with the company for 30 years. Is there anything I can do about this? I am tire of being silent.
