Have been living and working in PA for 30 years and also married and husband lost job in PA and could not find employment in PA but did find employment in Maryland and has been living there because of the traveling. We are still raising are family and have decided that I have to resign my job and move the family and my self to Maryland now that the school year is over and plan on staying there! Is there any unemployment benifits for myself till I find employment in Maryland? Thanks11
Hello,Thanks for using JA. In PA, there is a provision under the unemployment law that is called the "trailing spouse" provision. Sometimes the “trailing spouse” is eligible for unemployment compensation if he or she can show that the relocation was beyond his or her control (i.e., a company mandated the transfer) and the relocation created economic circumstances that could not be overcome..So in order to be eligible, you would have to prove to the unemployment office that the move was mandatory due to economic problems. But to be honest with you, I would opine that they may reject an application for benefits if it was a move that was based on a new job opportunity but did not require you to move..It is worth a shot to apply though, the worst they can say is no..
.
Thanks.
