Please try the following fix:
1. Go to the gmail.com website:
2. And if prompted, sign in your google / gmail email account.
3. Then see if your email works fine there.
3. Then there, click on the gear (wheel) icon at the upper right corner, then click on option Configure inbox.
4. Make sure to check each box in front of each of the two options Social and Promotions.
5. Click on Save at the bottom, and check.
