I have created a new thunderbird account operation that I have changed to POP and now I would like to change it to maildir type. I have been following the directions set out by WildByDesign on DSL Reports dated April/May 2016. Everything operates until I get to initiate my new account. I have tried to disable my original account by change the Account Name, Your Name and even the e-mail address. How do I go about disabling the old income server from blocking the new account which is identical to the old one that should now be under maildir.

Just to clarify, did you create an identical POP account for the existing account in Thunderbird, but with the mail type set to maildir?
